Considered the most improved course on the Golf Coast. Although only 3km from the sea Margate Country Club is located on relatively high ground and abounds with tall trees and excellent inland views.

Margate Country Club is attracting an increasing number of golfers both local and overseas visitors. An upgrading project, motivated by its keen and dedicated members, has produced a new and challenging course to test your skills. The re-design of the course was undertaken by golf course designers Matkovich and Hayes, and features superb greens, particularly the 9th and 18th both finishing par fives that share a vast contoured green in the St. Andrews tradition.

It’s a relatively easy start up the first and second fairways (except the out of bounds on the left) but the course gets more demanding from the third hole. The 10th and 11th on the second nine are really challenging holes, the short 11th par 3 being one of the most deceiving and demanding holes to be found anywhere.

Recent extensions to the clubhouse have provided a spacious bar and snooker room and phase 2, when completed, will extend the clubhouse facilities to accommodate any future demands.

This is a golfers dream in a 163 hectare nature conservation area with its many water features making it one of the most picturesque courses in Southern Africa. Designed by Peter Matkovitch, this course can be a bit intimidating to the higher handicap golfer, especially when the wind is blowing and adventurous shots can end up in a watery grave.

The emphasis here is on landscaping and conservation and as the great Walter Hagen once said, “Take time to smell the flowers”. Birdlife abounds – over 200 species have been noted and the grasslands and wooded areas provide a perfect habitat for a variety of Fauna and Flora. Visitors are encouraged to report sightings of buck and antelope, the Woolly Necked Stork and other birds of significant conservation value.

Port Shepstone Country Club is situated on the north bank of the Umzimkulu River.

Established in 1915, the course is made up of two contrasting nines. The first nine is well wooded with numerous indigenous trees to catch an errant shot. The second nine is far more open and closer to a links type course.

The club also offers tennis, squash and bowls facilities.

This undulating course has a very attractive setting with the sight and sound of the Indian Ocean never far away. Comparitavely short at 5323m, it boasts two par 5s and five par 3 holes, with the par 4 third being the most talked about hole on the course. It has a narrow fairway with out of bounds on the right and a coastal forest on the left to contend with. Many a promising round has come to grief on this toughie.

Like all coastal courses, Scottburgh Country Club can become quite tricky in the wind. One of the most spectacular shots is from the eighteenth tee where you fly your ball over towering trees and hopefully onto the fairway below.

Selborne Park, formerly a prime dairy farm, has been transformed into one of the most outstanding golf courses in South Africa.

The course is built on a magnificent site and is described by the developers as “somewhere between Gleneagles and Augusta”. Huge indigenous trees flank the fairways and water comes into play on most of the holes. It achieves a good balance between a fun round for the average player and a challenge for the low handicapper. Stray shots can be severely punished, like on the 3rd hole, a really testing par 5 where the nearer you get to the green the smaller the target appears. Following this is a real “postage stamp” short hole that requires a steady tee shot to survive.

Dennis Hutchinson, veteran pro golfer and now a TV sports commentator describes Southbroom as “one of the finest holiday golf courses to be found – anywhere”. It has a tough and tight layout through lush coastal bush and offers spectacular sea and surf views from some tees.

Established as a nine hole course in 1939 it was extended to eighteen holes in 1948. The course winds its way through the village and down to the sea.

The short par 3 fourth hole is part of the sand dune that protect this magnificent coast line and on rare occasions you can watch the dolphins play or a whale bask in the warm Indian Ocean currents.

Umdoni Park Golf Club is one of the hidden gems of KwaZulu-Natal’s golf coast. This 18 hole course is set within 200 hectares of indigenous coastal forest and is renowned for its fauna and flora and magnificent vistas.

Umdoni Park is in Pennington, very close to neighbouring Selborne Country Club.

Umkomaas Golf Club, the third oldest course in KwaZulu Natal, is a challenging 5479m course which tests the abilities of the low handicapped golfer to the full, yet still alows those with higher handicaps to enjoy a round.

For a game that will really put your skills to the test, you’ve got to play the Wild Coast Golf Course, rated as one of the best courses in Southern Africa. After a challenging day on the course, you can relax in the Clubhouse. Then when the sun goes down, head for the Wild Coast Sun-now with a touch of Tahitian magic-where the Casino and night life will keep you going until the early hours of the morning.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones (Jnr), this course is one of Sun International’s most challenging and scenic. It’s easy to see why.

With 59 large bunkers guarding manicured lawns, the hole layouts and scenery border on the fantastic. What’s more, when the coast breeze gets up, so does your score! However, if your ball lands in the dam below the Clubhouse, you’ll hear the ringing of a ships brass bell from the Clubhouse Balcony.

There are 6 par threes but two of these don’t have fairways from tee to green! Just lined gorges and on the 13th, a waterfall. And the shot on the twelfth (par five) is one of the most spectacular shots you are ever likely to play.

Although the course is 5800m in length, the walk is more like eight kilometers, so be prepared to take up to 6 hours for your game.
